Write an artistic sentence before choosing songs
Try describing the intended performance in one sentence without naming a genre. Perhaps it should move from restrained warmth to a shared celebration, or offer a reflective pause within a lively evening. That sentence becomes a decision tool. When a proposed song feels attractive but unrelated, ask whether it advances the idea or merely adds another favourite. Keeping something out can be an act of care.
Use contrast with a clear purpose
A quiet opening and an expansive closing can work together, but contrast needs context. Consider lyrical themes, rhythmic movement and the amount of attention each passage asks from guests. Place emotionally dense material where people can actually listen. If several pieces express the same feeling, decide whether repetition deepens that feeling or stalls the progression. Variety alone is not a convincing reason to change direction.
Choose the ensemble through musical function
Instead of beginning with a headcount, describe what the music needs to do. Does the concept depend on vocal space, rhythmic momentum or a more layered texture? Discuss those functions before settling on an ensemble. Room characteristics and the proposed performance position should then be checked with the venue team. Visual preferences matter, but they should not silently dictate musical choices that undermine the intended atmosphere.
Protect the idea during revisions
Tal Vaknin is a performing artist. SPS shapes repertoire, ensemble and artistic direction and coordinates the performance with planner and venue teams. A useful review therefore returns to the artistic sentence rather than assessing every request in isolation. Ask what a proposed addition replaces, how it changes the arc and whether it introduces a new dependency. This keeps late revisions thoughtful without treating the original concept as untouchable.
Before you enquire
- Write one sentence describing the intended emotional journey.
- Explain the musical function behind the proposed ensemble.
- Review new requests against the whole show, not just individual songs.
